The Sioux and other plains Indian tribes often used the dagger as a symbol of high status and strength. Chiefs and highly regarded warriors wore daggers around their necks in ornamental sheaths. Knives were also used in Plains Indian rituals. When a pact of peace was made between tribes each warrior would seal the oath by drawing the blade between the lips and touching it with the tongue. The knife was considered the most important part of the ritual because if it wasn't touched by the tongue of each warrior the pact was considered invalid. Thus, the knife was used not only as a weapon of war but also as a facilitator of peace.
